Tacoma Police and the Washington State Patrol are investigating after an officer shot a man.

Police say the shooting happened at Portland and 28th St. The officer saw a transient who was panhandling, which is a misdemeanor in the city of Tacoma.

Police say the officer contacted the transient and the transient did not want to listen. He hit the officer with a metal pipe.

The officer fired multiple times on the transient.  The transient was taken to Tacoma General Hospital with critical injuries.

The officer had minor injuries and was also taken to the hospital.
