Frightened but brave Good Samaritans are the reason an out of control gunman in Federal Way was stopped by police.
They saw the shootings, heard the gunshots and still managed to dial 911.
The 911 tapes reveal many people calling in that night. They were frightened - many of them too scared to go outside.
"Oh my God, gunshots, please help me, gunshots right now,” one person said.
911 Operator: OK, does somebody have a gun?
911 Operator: OK. I want you to stay down, OK? Do you know who this is?
Caller: I don't know, it's my next door neighbor or down below.
Some of those neighbors had bullets come flying through their walls as they hid inside their apartments as the gunman shot his girlfriend and then killed three other people, likely because he thought they were somehow witnesses to the crime.
The Federal Way Police Chief, Fire Chief and City Council members met with community members on Wednesday night.
"The world is full of suffering, but it's also full of overcoming. Tonight, we begin that overcoming," Mayor Skip Priest said.
Police Chief Brian Todd extended his sincere condolences to all of the affected families.
"You are not alone," he said.
