An Astoria woman died in a crash near Naselle on Wednesday afternoon and Troopers believe two young children who survived the accident were likely alone for hours at the remote crash site.

The Washington State Patrol says the 26-year-old driver was traveling southboudn on Highway 401 when the car she was driving ran off the road and hit a tree.

The woman died at the scene. Two girls, ages 2 and 4, survived the collision. A passing motorist found them.

Troopers say the 2-year-old was seriously injured. They say the 4-year-old may have pulled the 2-year-old from the car and kept her warm with a blanket.

"Well done is all you can say to the person who took the time to find these baby girls at this crash," Trooper Russ Winger said via Twitter. "Most people would not have been so observant."

The accident is under investigation.
