PORTLAND -- Officers investigating reports of a gunman on the grounds of a Southeast Portland hospital shot and killed a suspect in a confrontation, according to police bureau spokesman Sgt. Pete Simpson.

The man was shot after police responded to Portland Adventist Medical Center about 9:30 p.m. Sunday. The hospital was locked down for several hours to protect patients and staff as officers checked out a report of a man with a gun in the parking lot, he said.

The hospital initiated what's called a "Code Silver," which means a staff member has seen an armed, combative person on premises, said hospital spokeswoman Judy Leach.

As police searched the large hospital complex, some officers encountered the suspect and shots were fired. Simpson said that the man died at the scene. No officers were hurt.

Marcus Beck was nearby at the time and told KGW he heard nine shots fired.

The shooting remained under investigation early Monday and no names or other details of the shooting were released.

“We appreciate the vigilance of individuals who helped keep this a safe community,” Leach said.
