CALDWELL -- A Canyon County man is in intensive care after being shot Sunday afternoon. Investigators believe his wife pulled the trigger.

Forty-one-year-old Paige Ireland is charged with aggravated battery and using a firearm to commit a felony.

In a probable cause statement, a Canyon County sheriff's detective says she shot her husband of 13 years, Samuel Ireland, during an argument at their home on Green Road in Caldwell.

Paige Ireland told deputies that her husband had been abusive, and that she was trying to leave the home at the time of the argument.

The gunshot - from a hunting rifle - hit Samuel Ireland in the lower right rib area.

His wife told detectives that she didn't intend to fire a live round and she only wanted to scare him by clicking the trigger. She called 911 after the shooting.

Samuel Ireland underwent surgery and remains in critical condition at Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center.
