BOISE -- The man accused of breaking into Zoo Boise in November and killing a patas monkey is scheduled for a court proceeding today at 9am.

Michael Watkins last appeared in court earlier in January to be arraigned on a third charge, providing false information to a police officer.  Watkins had already been charged with burglary and grand theft.

Prosecutors say on November 17th Watkins broke into Zoo Boise with the intent of stealing a monkey, but the monkey fought back.  Prosecutors say Watkins beat the animal on the head with a tree branch.

Watkins' defense attorney has maintained that Watkins was defending himself.  The defense says Watkins had been drinking and wandering around Julia Davis Park when he found himself in the zoo's patas monkey exhibit.

Watkins is expected to enter a plea at Thursday morning's court proceedings.  A motion to amend information has also been filed according to court records.

Look for updates from the Ada County Courhouse later this morning.
