PORTLAND – A team from Oregon Health & Science University is back in Portland after helping victims of Superstorm Sandy.
Doctor Terri Schmidt and Doctor Jon Jui are part of Oregon’s Disaster Medical Assistance Team that spent weeks in the communities hit hardest by the storm.
The team worked in tents helping patients with respiratory problems. They also helped move patients from a shelter to their new homes. Schmidt has helped out in past disasters including Katrina and 9/11, but for her, the disaster left over from Superstorm Sandy had its own set of challenges.
“I’ve never been to a hurricane before where a week later there was a snowstorm, and so you have hurricane damage and then snow all over the ground. That’s not something I’m used to seeing. We saw people in their houses with kids and the whole family without food, water or heat,” Schmidt said.
