BOISE -- A man and his dog are dead after a Toyota SUV crashed into the Payette River Monday near Horseshoe Bend.
Officers with the Idaho State Police responded to a report of a vehicle upside down in the Payette River two miles north of Horseshoe Bend at approximately 7:19 p.m.
Rescuers say both the man and his dog were dead when they arrived on scene. They describe the man's vehicle as a 1997 Toyota 4 Runner.
Police say the man was driving northbound on State Highway 55 when he likely swerved and drove off the right shoulder of the road. They say he then overcorrected and drove off a 40-foot embankment into the river.
Officers say the man was wearing his seatbelt. His name hasn't been released pending family notification.
The crash is under investigation by the Idaho State Police with assistance from emergency crews from Horseshoe Bend and Crouch.
