Two teens died and three were injured in a single-car accident in South Seattle on Sunday night.
The car was traveling northbound on 8th Avenue South when the driver lost control and crashed into a utility pole in the 9200 block.
The driver, identified as 16-year-old Luis Martinez, was killed instantly. Four additional occupants, all juveniles, were treated on scene by Seattle Fire Department and transported to Harborview Medical Center.
One of the passengers, identified as 13-year-old Lucie Hernandez, died shortly after arriving at HMC.
The additional three occupants were listed in critical and/or serious condition. Friends say one of the teens hospitalized is the sister of Hernandez.
Maurico Rodriguez, a friend of Martinez, said Martinez had only recently gotten his driver’s license.
By law, anyone under 18 cannot drive with other teenagers. Investigators say Martinez was driving four of his friends when they hit the power pole.
Those that live nearby say fast cars go up and down 8th Ave all the time.
"I don't know about racing, but they're definitely speeding up and down here all the time,” said Javier Morales.
Paul Mai is on the neighborhood block watch, and says he's raised the issue of speeding on the street before.
"Sometimes, I put out the garbage can and they speed. I tell them to slow down,” he said.
Police continue to investigate.
A Facebook page has been set up for Martinez and Hernandez.
