A Lewis County man was jailed Friday, accused of punching a puppy and throwing it against a tree.

According to Lewis County Sheriff Chief Deputy Stacy Brown, deputies were called to the town of Ethel, Washington just before 1 a.m. Friday for a report of an animal assault.

Deputies found the 20-year-old suspect "obviously intoxicated and agitated," said Brown.

The man's family told deputies that he had gotten drunk and beaten the family's 5-month old German Shepherd puppy.

Brown said the dog was taken to a veterinarian in Centralia who said the dog had injuries consistent with head trauma. The puppy will remain with the vet for observation.

The suspect was booked into the Lewis County Jail accused of first degree animal cruelty.

KING 5 News typically does not name suspects until they are formally charged.
