THE DALLES -- A man being questioned about a reported rape was shot dead by two police officers after he came out of a bathroom brandishing a knife, according to Oregon State Police spokesman Lt. Gregg Hastings.
The incident began about 11 p.m. when police were dispatched to a rape in progress in the 700 block of Hostetler Street. When officers arrived, both the suspect and victim were at the home, said Hastings, speaking on behalf of the Wasco County district attorney's office.
The suspect, 50, cooperated at first with officers who were questioning him after the reported rape. The victim had already been taken to a hospital.
During the questioning, the man went into a bathroom about midnight, and came out with a big kitchen knife, threatening the officers, Hastings said.
The man refused orders to drop the knife and was shot, Hastings said. One of the officers started CPR, which continued until paramedics arrived and took over. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The two officers were not hurt.
