PORTLAND -- Multnomah County crews had to pull an SUV out of the Willamette River Thursday afternoon.

The driver had parked at the Cathedral Park boat ramp and neglected to set the emergency brake, according to Lt. Harry Smith of the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office.

The driver told KGW he had borrowed the SUV from a friend for an early morning fishing trip, and when he stepped out of the vehicle at the top of the boat ramp it rolled into the river.

"The boat ramp was not closed since the SUV had floated slightly downstream where it came to rest on top of pilings in the water where it does not block access for boaters," Smith said.

He added that alcohol was not a factor and no citations were issued.

The vehicle went into the water at around 5 a.m. and was towed out at the boat ramp just after noon.
