President leads Washington, D.C. tribute for Tom Foley

SPOKANE, Wash.--President Barack Obama ordered flags be flown at half staff Tuesday in honor of Spokane’s Tom Foley.

The former Speaker of the House and former ambassador to Japan was remembered Tuesday in a memorial service art the U.S. Capitol.

President Obama and President Bill Clinton led the tribute. House Speaker John Boehner was also in attendance.

St. Aloysius Church and Gonzaga University will host a local service on November 1 at 11:00 a.m. The public is welcome to attend. Organizers also plan to show the service on a big screen at the Martin Center on Gonzaga’s campus.

Foley was a 30 year veteran of the House.

He died on October 18 at the age of 84.
