MIDLAND CITY, Ala. -- Federal officials are finally talking about the raid that ended a nearly seven-day standoff with an Alabama man who held a 5-year-old boy in an underground bunker after killing a school bus driver.
The FBI says Jimmy Lee Dykes was killed during a firefight. No agents were injured.
Bomb technicians who searched the property around the bunker found two explosive devices. One was located in the bunker. Another was found in a plastic ventilation pipe that negotiators used to communicate with the man.
FBI Special Agent Jason Pack said Dykes, a Vietnam veteran, had also "reinforced the bunker against any attempted entry by law enforcement." Officials say the raid was launched after negotiations deteriorated and Dykes was seen with a gun. A local official says Dykes was monitored with some sort of camera.
Officers will continue to sweep the 100-acre property and, when they finish, investigators can more thoroughly investigate.
Meanwhile, the boy who was rescued appears to be doing well.
