The New Yorker released its cover (PHOTO) following the Supreme Court's gay marriage decisions this past week. The cover depicts Bert and Ernie watching coverage of the ruling and snuggling on the couch together.

It's a picture that has already caused quite a stir.

Rumors about Bert and Ernie being gay have circulated for years. In 2011, Sesame Workshop denied the pair was gay saying they were puppets and don't have a sexual orientation.

The cover artwork was actually posted independently to Tumblr by the artist.

Wednesday was a historic day for gay rights, with the Supreme Court granting legally married gay couples equal federal footing with all other married Americans and clearing the way for same-sex marriages to resume in California.

In a 5-4 decision, the court wiped away part of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) that kept legally married same-sex couples from receiving tax, health and pension benefits. In another 5-4 decision, the Supreme Court ruled that California's Proposition 8, which banned gay marriage, was unconstitutional.
