WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama says he thinks Republicans and Democrats can work together to spur job growth even though the two parties disagree on many issues.

Obama met Tuesday at the White House with House and Senate leaders of both parties to discuss the economy and ways to stimulate hiring in the private sector. He said Americans are frustrated with partisanship that blocks action on many key issues.

Obama said he hopes Congress soon will pass bills that use tax breaks and other incentives to encourage small businesses to add new workers. He said the government can accomplish a lot if elected officials keep the public's needs uppermost in mind. Republicans have blocked Democrats on many issues, including health care.
