ST. CHARLES, Mo. -- A jury trial is underway for a suburban St. Louis man accused of breaking into his ex-girlfriend’s home and injuring her Italian greyhound so badly that the dog had to be euthanized.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that 37-year-old Charles Zidek of Chesterfield is charged with burglary and animal abuse.
Authorities say Zidek entered the home of a St. Charles woman in October 2011 and repeatedly threw the dog, Vinny, against a wall. DNA evidence from blood at the scene allegedly matched Zidek’s DNA, and a neighbor saw Zidek’s truck in the driveway that afternoon.
