OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) — A Washington state Senate committee has heard testimony on a bill to give need-based student financial aid to illegal immigrants.

The measure, which supporters call the Dream Act, was heard Thursday in the Senate Higher Education Committee. It advanced from the state House earlier this month with Democrats united in favor and Republicans split.

Republican Sen. Barbara Bailey of Oak Harbor is the committee chair. After the hearing she declined to state her position on the bill or say whether it was likely to advance from her panel.

Senate Majority Leader Rodney Tom of Medina also sits on the panel. He said he supports the bill but that Bailey will decide whether to put it up for a committee vote.
