SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — The Spokane Fire Department says it will no longer make routine calls to the county jail to draw blood from drunken driving or drug suspects who are booked into custody.

The department says it costs $300 each time an engine rolls outs, and it can no longer provide a blood draw service.

KREM reports (http://bit.ly/Yxn3An ) that jail officials said relying on fire resources was cheaper than hiring more doctors and purchasing medical equipment.

The department says it will continue to respond to emergencies at the jail.
