VANCOUVER, Wash. (AP) — Two close legislative races in Clark County are going to an automatic recount.
County Auditor Greg Kimsey told The Columbian (http://is.gd/YvI1Pi ) there will be a hand recount next week of 58,994 ballots cast in the 17th District.
That will determine the outcome of the state Senate race between incumbent Republican Don Benton and Democrat Tim Probst. Benton has a 78-vote lead in election results certified Tuesday.
The other recount will decide who wins Probst's old House seat. Democrat Monica Stonier has a 139-vote lead over Republican Julie Olson.
The recount could affect the balance of power in the Senate. A Benton win would give the Democrats a 26-23 majority, but two Democrats have indicated they'll work with the GOP. The House is solidly Democratic.
