People use CraigsList to sell a lot of things. But a baby?

A Dallas area woman has been arrested after police say she tried to sell her baby online.

"I think it's sad and I think it's just a sign of the time," said neighbor Latonia Smith.

Police say the sale price for the 4 to 5 month old baby was between $4,000 and $6,500.

The woman said to have taken up the offer backed out.

North Texas police took 27-year-old Britany Hill into custody Friday afternoon - wearing a blanket over her head in 97 degree Dallas heat.

Sources say Hill was trying to save on fees from adoption attorneys.

But that's not why police were called to her apartment that day.

Shadow Ridge Apartment Management called police and CPS because they found the baby boy in her apartment - alone.

Family came forward, but CPS took custody of the child.

"I'm just glad the baby is safe and away from those people," Smith said. "It's obviously clear she didn't want the baby."

It was also clear, the young mother had financial problems.

Management found the baby after checking the apartment because Hill hadn't paid her rent.

Neighbors described her as a troubled young woman.

"I saw her when she was pregnant," said Smith. "She just seemed to be Very depressed. Always alone. Sitting on the stairway. I feel for her. But I feel more for that baby."

Dallas police say they took Hill to jail for child abandonment. They have not said if she faces a charge for allegedly attempting to sell her baby -- though a report was filed on it.
