NEW YORK -- This is the day that One World Trade Center can claim to be New York City's tallest skyscraper.

Workers will be putting steel columns in place that will make the unfinished frame of the building a little more than 1,250 feet high. That's just high enough to peek over the roof of the observation deck at the Empire State building.

The so-called "Freedom Tower" isn't expected to reach its full height for at least another year.

Counting a 408-foot-tall needle, it's expected to be the tallest building in the U.S., and the third tallest in the world.
