WSU student takes flack online after crowdfunding for St. Jude attempt

KREM 2's Alexa Block caught up with Danni today who says despite her good intentions she's getting some push back.

PULLMAN, Wash. -- A Washington State University student is striving to support a great cause.

Danni Messina sent out a tweet saying, “This time of year is about giving - this year, I am giving back to St. Jude & the families who are supported by their amazing services. Every favorite: $.25
Every retweet : $.50." The tweet got nearly 200,000 re-tweets and 450,000 favorites. That adds up to more than $200,000. But as a college student, Messina does not have that kind of money. She followed it up with a tweet saying, ''I just want to make a difference!"

There has been a lot of talk about this selfless act online. Some people have been supportive and others have been critical. Messina said she is not the least worried about those people who want to be negative.

"I want to give back and I know people have that reality of being in hospital with their family and if there's anything that I can do that's what I want to do. So from that I started this tweet," she said.

Since the post went viral she has mostly seen support with some twitter trolls and haters chiming in saying she was looking for some social media fame.

"They can say whatever but I mean it's not true and I know the people I've talked to know that my intentions where pure,” said Messina. “I just want to keep it positive, that is most ridiculous thing I ever heard."

Her positive outlook and selflessness is much appreciated by those over at St. Jude.

“She reminds us of the incredible power and importance of helping others and how contagious the spirit of giving can be,” said St. Jude Representative Coury Shadyac.

Messina said she is committed to her cause, no matter what some people say.

"Honestly it was incredible I definitely wasn't expecting it and the awareness part has been really awesome," said Messina.

In order to keep her promise, Messina set up a GoFundMe Page. The money goes directly to St. Jude Children's. As of 5:00 p.m. Tuesday, she has raised $8,857 with a goal of raising $50,000
