Fresh fruits and vegetables can become more expensive and harder to find as they go out of season, which may lead to some shoppers finding themselves in the frozen aisle.
But is frozen produce as nutritious as fresh produce?
The short answer? Yes, fruits and vegetables that have been frozen, for the most part, have similar nutritional value to fresh produce.
There are some caveats, however.
Officials at The American Council on Exercise said B vitamins in particular are sensitive to heat and light and therefore can be lost during the freezing process.
Officials also said some produce like frozen peas actually has more vitamin A than fresh peas.
For the most part, frozen and fresh fruits & veggies have similar nutrional value (minerals, fiber, etc.). The real nutritional difference between frozen and fresh produce comes when there are additives.
"Sometimes they have fruit juices or fruit sugars added to them. They can still call those natural, but they are indeed added. And then on the vegetables you want to be careful with especially sodium and any kind of sauces they might be in, but you can look at the labels and see that,” Dietician with the Spokane Multicare Rockwood Clinic, Jen Ropp, said.
“So whether it's an ingredient list or a nutrition label you're looking at, those are the things to check,” Ropp said.
