SPOKANE -- Injured fighting a fire in the early morning and out of the hospital before noon?

Injured firefighter Sean Poole discusses falling while battling the blaze at the Joel building downtown.

Well, that was Shawn Poole's day. And he probably couldn't have summed things up any better himself.

"Firefighter's are a special breed," Poole said in his first public comments since falling through an opening leading the basement of the Joel building on Thursday.

"They're extremely resilient."

He suffered bruised ribs in the fall and sustained an injury to his left leg that will require him to see an orthopedic surgeon.

Obviously Poole was concerned about his health after taking the fall, but he didn't believe that he was in a life-threatening situation.

"I knew I had both arms and legs and wasn't bleeding profusely," he said.
