Fire destroys garage in Newman Lake

11:14 AM PDT on Wednesday, July 16, 2008

NEWMAN LAKE, WA--The owner of two garages that burned to the ground says things could have been much worse. Tom Stebbins's new home was under construction in Newman Lake.

Late Tuesday night the garage of the new home caught fire and was completely consumed by the blaze. Fortunately, firefighters were able to save the nearby home from the flames, but the fire got close enough that it melted windows on the house.

Stebbins found out his garage was on fire when he got a call from a neighbor who told him that there were large flames coming out of the building.

He says it's ironic that the garage caught fire: he had just purchased doors from the Ugly Duck, a building supply store in Spokane that was partially destroyed in a 3-alarm blaze just last week.

Stebbins says the damage will probably set him back around $100,000, but he's thankful that, given the dry and breezy conditions, that things didn't get worse.

The home was vacant at the time of the fire, and no one was hurt.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
