UPDATE> $40 in stolen booze led to deadly shootout

PONDERAY, Idaho -- Idaho authorities have identified a man who was shot and killed in a gun battle with police on Monday. Mark E. Betts, 49, was a resident of Hope, Idaho.

Surveillance video shows Mark Betts grabbing two bottles of whiskey at a Ponderay, ID liquor store.

A spokesperson for the Idaho State Liquor Dispensary tells KREM 2's Erik Hedlund that Betts walked out of the liquor store in the Bonner Mall with $40 worth of booze. When the clerk confronted him, Betts pulled out a wooden club and said "do you want some of this?".

The clerk let Betts go and called police, who followed the suspect's car out of the parking lot. After a short pursuit, Bettswas stopped along Colburn Culver Road.

Investigators say Betts fired several shots at officers. One of those bullets passed through the shirt of a Bonner Co. sheriff's deputy. The deputy was not hurt

Officers returned fire killing Betts.

Idaho State Police have taken over the investigation.
