3-year-old abuse victim Kyra Wine's condition has improved to serious and she's talking with her father and hospital staff.

Kyra was initially listed in critical condition after deputies found dead flesh on her arms and legs when they were asked by a citizen to a do welfare check on her at her home in St. Maries, ID.

Kyra's mom, Christina Haynes, and Haynes' live-in boyfriend, Charles Smith, are in the Benewah County Jail on charges of felony injury to a child. Kyra lived with Haynes and Smith apart from her father.

Kyra's father, Tom Wine, told KREM 2 NEWS that Kyra has improved since she was given a 50% chance of living on Tuesday. She is now in serious condition.

Tom said Kyra is still bandaged from head to toe, but is talking, puckering up to give Tom kisses, and calling him "daddy." He said she wants out of the hospital and "wants her car seat" so she can leave. She is very anxious whenever her father leaves the room and refuses to let go of a teddy bear that she received when she arrived at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane. Kyra is heavily sedated most of the time.

Tom said she shows no signs of internal injuries and when he looked at her hands recently they did not appear to be heavily damaged after initial reports of dead flesh covering them.

Tom said the Benewah County Sheriff's Office tried to contact him Tuesday after they found Kyra, but could not get through to him. He first learned of her condition from his father who called and said they had to get to the St. Maries hospital right away because she may not live.

Tom described a scene of chaos at the hospital when he arrived with Kyra covered with bandages and hospital staff running around frantically.

Tom has two children with suspect Christina Haynes--Kyra and six-year-old Amanda Wine. His relationship with Christina ended about a year ago and they communicate primarily through their grandparents.

Amanda was also living with Haynes and Smith and was taken from their home on Tuesday.

Tom has not spoken with Amanda about what happened to Kyra, but he senses that she is scared of what happened. He said he is not pressing Amanda for answers and is already looking into counseling for her. He said Amanda is very protective of her little sister.

Amanda is back home in St. Maries with her dad and he says she is settling into a normal routine playing with her friends.

Tom said he never met "Charlie", the man accused of abusing his daughter.

Tom told KREM 2 NEWS he has not been told any details of the investigation into what happened and doesn't really want to know them. He said his sole focus is on Kyra.

Tom is home now in St. Maries preparing his home for all of the medical equipment that will need to go into the house to care for Kyra when she comes home.

He is looking into establishing a fund for people to make donations to help pay for her medical care.
