SPOKANE--Spokane County and City officials have extended a ban for recreational use on a major part of the Spokane River.

A temporary boat barrier will be installed in front of Upriver Dam on Friday.

The ban affects the river between the Argonne Bridge in Millwood and Upriver Dam and will last until a temporary boat barrier is installed.

Boulder Beach is also closed.

Spokane County Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich and Spokane Mayor Mary Verner are worried that the absence of the boat barrier in front of the dam could cause a kayaker, swimmer or a boater to get sucked over the dam by the fast flowing river.

The boat barrier broke away late last week as the river started rising.

The boat barrier is a type of a large fence attached to buoys that keeps boats from getting into the dam. It won't be replaced in its normal location in front of Upriver Dam until the high water goes down.

The recreation ban on the rest of the river that had been in effect in Spokane County has now been lifted.

The current recreation ban between the Argonne Bridge and the dam is expected to expire once the temporary boat barrier is in place.

The temporary boat barrier will be placed a little farther upstream from the dam than the original barrier.

Also, a No-Wake ordinance is still in effect in Kootenai County for Lake Coeur d'Alene, Fernan Lake, the Chain Lakes and the Coeur d'Alene River.

The County Ordinance states that if either Coeur d’Alene Lake or the Coeur d’Alene River is above flood stage then the NO WAKE zones apply.
