COLFAX, Wash. -- The Whitman County Sheriff's Office says there's nothing it can do to stop a pair of 'jail birds' from chipping away at the building. Two woodpeckers are building a nest in the side of the jail, which is covered by a thin layer of stucko.
The birds can be seen going in and out of the hole, dropping foam insulation to the ground to make more room.
This isn't the first time the jail in Colfax has come under attack from woodpeckers. Workers have patched several other nests from years past.
Whitman County Sheriff Brett Myers says he doesn't have anything against the birds; he just worries they're not trying to help someone on the inside.
