MOSES LAKE, WA. -- NASCAR racing could soon make a pit stop in Eastern Washington.

Moses Lake City Council members say they're interested in building a multi-million dollar track in Grant County.

Ron Covey, the Mayor of Moses Lake, says he was excited NASCAR was looking to build a racetrack in Washington. When a plan near Bremerton fell through, he saw an opportunity. Covey says he's been a NASCAR fan since 1979.

Three weeks ago, the International Speedway Corporation dropped the idea of building a $368 million dollar racetrack near Bremerton after encountering stiff opposition for funding from local officials and resistance from the state legislature.

Covey says Grant County wants a shot. "I can see it being located somewhere on Interstate 90, perhaps somewhere between here and George."

The ISC plans to pay $186 million to build the track but wants the contracted city or county to pay the other $180 million in construction costs.

Most of the construction costs could be covered by bonds at the state level that would then be paid off by taxes once the track is operational.

A bill was proposed to do just that in the legislature, but it stalled when the Kitsap County site collapsed.
