SPOKANE -- Federal prosecutors say the last defendant in a Spokane diploma mill case will be tried in June.
Eight people were accused of setting up phony online universities and distributing fake degrees in 2005
Assistant U.S. Attorney George Jacobs told a judge Thursday that Roberta L. Markishtum faces additional charges after she rejected a plea agreement on a reduced charge.
Markishtum was the last of eight people indicted in 2005 accusing them of setting up phony Internet universities and selling bogus college degrees and transcripts to more than 8,200 customers around the world.
Her lawyer, Richard Wall, says Markishtum was scheduled to enter a guilty plea Thursday to concealing a conspiracy to commit wire and mail fraud, but backed out when prosecutors would not agree to home confinement.
