BNSF has turned in its final plan on how it will clean-up leaked fuel at the Hauser Lake depot.
A series of cracks and leaks at the depot caused fuel to seep into the ground. The Idaho Department of Environmental Quality is concerned that fuel will further contaminate the Rathdrum Aquifer.
This new plan commits BNSF to regularly monitoring pollution levels. The company says it has already removed 40-50% of the petroleum from the ground. However, the state is requiring all of the fuel to be cleaned up. There is no set deadline for when that has to happen.
Leaks from the depot forced BNSF to shut down operations for more than two months in 2005.
