Update, Tuesday 1:15pm: Police have arrested a Geiger Corrections inmate mistakenly released last week. 52-year-old Darnell Riley was arrested without incident at a home on the 2100 block of West Dalton in Northwest Spokane. Riley could face escape charges, even though a jailer's mistake led to his release. Background info below...
SPOKANE -- Authorities are searching for a man mistakenly released from the Geiger Corrections Center.
52-year-old Darnell Riley was mistakenly released from Geiger Corrections.
52-year-old Darnell Riley was released from Geiger on January 25th about 9 p.m. He was being held on two felony counts of possession of controlled substances.
According to Geiger Jail Commander John McGrath, another inmate with a similar last name had posted bail with the court that day and was scheduled to be released. When the name “Riley” was paged at the center, inmate Darnell Riley arrived at the office and was released.
The employee involved in the booking-out procedure failed to check Riley’s name and photograph against the paperwork for the inmate that was intended to be released, Capt. McGrath said.
The error was discovered the following Monday, but Darnell Riley was already gone by then.
“We’ll be reviewing our releasing procedures, but I think it’s pretty clear that this was an employee error rather than a system error,” McGrath said today. “We had an older black man released instead of a younger white man.”
If you have any tips about Riley's whereabouts, call 242-TIPS.
