Work begins on expansion of Mount Spokane ski area

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) - The Washington Supreme Court will allow the Mt. Spokane Ski & Snowboard Park to begin its long-planned expansion.

General Manager Brad McQuarrie says construction will begin Wednesday on the mountain's backside, creating nearly 80 additional acres of groomed trails and seven new runs.

The new area is expected to be open by the 2018-19 season.

Mt. Spokane Ski & Snowboard Park is a concession that operates within Mount Spokane State Park.

Environmental groups opposed the expansion, saying it would impact wildlife habitat and forested lands.

But the state Supreme Court this week declined to review a challenge to the proposed expansion, clearing the way for work to begin.
