Witnesses tell investigators deadly Downtown shooting was accidental

SPOKANE, Wash. -- Witnesses of a deadly shooting in Downtown Spokane on Tuesday told investigators the incident was accidental, according to court documents.

According to court documents, Jose Ismael Hernandez-Soto, 24, was driving in Downtown with his girlfriend Laura Nunez, her younger brother and his friend, when he was shot and killed inside his car.

The four of them are from Selah, Washington and were visiting Spokane. Nunez told investigators Hernandez-Soto had brought a black rifle with him on their trip.

Court documents said they visited Riverfront Park and the mall. When they returned to the car near Washington Street and Main, Nunez said she was putting an address into the GPS when Hernandez-Soto asked her younger brother to hand him the gun. Court documents said that is when Nunez heard a loud boom and she realized Hernandez-Soto had been shot. Court documents said her younger brother yelled that he thought the safety was on. Nunez and the two 16-year-old boys got out of the car and tried to help Hernandez-Soto. Officials said he was pronounced dead at the scene. The Spokane County Medical Examiner said he died from a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

The 16-year-old accused of shooting Hernandez-Soto has been charged with second degree manslaughter. While he was being interviewed by investigators, the teen told them “Don’t want to believe the gun was in my hand but it was…I’m scared.”
