WA: How the new water law could impact local residents

KREM 2's Molly Trotter has the story (10/19/16)

SPOKANE, Wash. --- Earlier this month, the Supreme Court made a decision that may have a significant impact on builders, and their ability to issue building permits.

The new law would affect builders who rely on private wells as the main water source on the property they are building on.

The case came about after counties across Washington State failed to comply with the Growth Management Act's requirements to protect water resources.

The new change will require counties, like Spokane County, to provide more evidence that there is enough water in an area, before issuing a building permit.

Spokane County officials told KREM 2 there is still a lot to figure out before the law goes into effect in Washington.

A meeting was held on Monday night in the County Commissioners Hearing Room to answer questions about the new requirements.

You can read more about the new law, on the Department of Ecology’s website.
