Spokane Valley robbery suspect peacefully surrenders after standoff

SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. – A man was arrested after a standoff with deputies Saturday after officials said the man stole his ex-girlfriend’s car.

Deputies responded to the report of a stolen car on North Argonne in Spokane around 12:15 p.m. The woman said her ex-boyfriend, Nicholas Loverro, 27, called her earlier, sounded upset and asked her to give him a ride. She said he was acting strange when she picked him up from Northern Quest Casino so she drove him straight to his home on East Nora but he refused to get out of the car. The woman told deputies she got scared and decided to drive to Argonne and Mission so they would be in a public place.

Once they got there Loverro still would not get out of the car. The victim said she feared for her safety, then pulled the ignition keys and planned to run into the store but he grabbed her hand and squeezed until she dropped the keys. He pushed her out of the car as she was screaming for help and drove away, according to the victim.

Deputies said while they were talking to the victim, Loverro called her several times asking her why she was talking to the cops and denied stealing her car. During one of the calls, the victim could tell he was at his home on Nora because she could hear his young daughter.

Deputies went to his home and later decided to call in the SWAT team and hostage negotiators due to the severity of the incident, the safety of the child, the suspect’s history and his refusal to answer his door.

A hostage negotiator was able to contact Loverro by phone and convinced him to come out peacefully. He was booked into the Spokane County Jail for second degree robbery and unrelated warrants. Officials said he is also being held on unrelated charges of burglary, harassment-threats to kill, second degree malicious mischief, reckless endangerment, driving while suspended and DUI.
