Spokane Police say pot shops are not bigger crime targets

People asked us to investigate if marijuana shops are targeted more than other businesses? Spokane Police told KREM 2 they are not.

SPOKANE, Wash. – The shooting in North Spokane Tuesday night is the second major crime to happen at a pot shop in recent months.

Police are searching for the person who shot a woman at Starbuds Cannabis off East Francis. Officials said the woman has serious, but non-life threatening injuries.

Back in September, an employee at the Lucid pot shop in Cheney was kidnapped and killed. There have also been several break-ins such in the past few years at various pot shops across Spokane.

So, are marijuana shops targeted more than other businesses? Spokane Police officials said they are not. Police said there does not appear to be a trend of targeting pot shops based on their merchandise or cash.

KREM 2 checked the Spokane Crime Map and plugged in five different addresses for marijuana shops around Spokane. At each pot shop address, we did not see any more dots near pot shops than other areas in Spokane.

When KREM 2 asked police if pot shops attract crime, they said they do not believe crime has increased around pot shops either.

As for the shooting at Starbuds, the suspect still has not been caught.  If you have any information about the robbery or the suspect you are asked to call crime check at 509-456-2233.
