Suspect killed after opening fire on two SPD officers in their cruiser

Officer-involved shooting in Hillyard

SPOKANE, Wash. – Spokane Police said a suspect who opened fire on two officers Tuesday night was shot and killed.

Spokane Police Chief Craig Meidl said they received a 911 call to a home near Rowan and Haven around 6:00 p.m. for a domestic violence situation involving a gun. During the call, Meidl said the 911 operator could hear shots being fired. When officers arrived on scene, the suspect had already left the scene.

Then, an hour and a half later, while two officers were sitting in their patrol cars, the suspect opened fire on the officers. Meidl said the officers returned fire, hitting the suspect. The officers immediately rendered first aid to the suspect and he was transported to the hospital where he later died. SPD reported that there were no other injuries.

Meidl said the officers were wearing body cams but because they were sitting in their vehicles at the time of the incident, it is unclear if they were on.

It is unclear how many shots were fired but a witness on scene said she heard as many as eight shots.

Police have a one block perimeter set up in the area. Traffic controls are in place and disruptions could last into Wednesday morning.

Washington State Patrol and the Spokane County Sheriff's Office will take over the investigation.
