SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. -- Spokane Valley Fire crews responded to a fully involved house fire near 12th Avenue and South Pines Road early Thursday morning.
Crews arrived just before 2:00 a.m. to find the structure fully engulfed with flames that were visible from over half a mile away. The fire was declared defensive at the outset, as the heavily damaged structure was deemed incapable of supporting life and too dangerous to firefighter safety, officials said in a release.
The resident was sleeping outside of the house at the time and was uninjured in the fire.
Thirty minutes after crews originally responded, the majority of the fire has been extinguished, but the condition of the building hampered extinguishment of isolated hot spots.
Crews are investigating the cause of the fire. SVFD would like to remind residents to replace batteries in all smoke detectors every six months.
