SPOKANE, Wash. -- State Corrections officials and the Spokane Police Department addressed the release of a level three sex offender at a public safety forum Thursday night.
David McCuistion, 55, was found guilty in 1993 of rape in the third degree, as well as third degree assault, according to a joint release from Spokane County Sheriff's Office and Spokane Police Department. A judge granted McCuistion release in Pierce County, and allowed him to live at the 300 block of West 2nd in Spokane.
Authorities said McCuistion will have to meet 72 conditions ordered by the court. He also has a sex offender treatment provider who he will have to meet with. McCuistion is also being monitored with a GPS tracker, but officials say that just notifies them of his whereabouts. KREM 2 on Your Side ask if there were any steps being taken to make sure residents were safe. They say all they can do is notify the public and keep a close eye him.
“Seventy-two conditions is a lot. We do our best to monitor each and every one of them and most of it has to be based on how the individual wants to comply. Can we guarantee safety? We can’t. Can we get as close as possible? That’s what we do,” said Kimberly Acker with the Washington Department of Corrections.
DOC officials have been working with Spokane Police Department closely to make sure they know how to handle this type of sex offender.
