Construction almost complete in areas near Spokane schools

Construction areas near Spokane schools almost complete

SPOKANE, Wash. — Construction crews are still working on many streets near Bemiss, Shaw and Regal Schools, completing pedestrian upgrades to sidewalks in the area.

The upgrades include filling in missing portions of sidewalks, curb ramps for those with disabilities, storm drainage upgrades and some pavements and sign replacement.

The city said it is going to cost $565,000.

Curb bump outs are also a big part of this project.  The idea is to bring the sidewalk well into the street, shortening the distance across and ideally making it safer.

In the meantime, many roads in the area are partially blocked or completely closed as crews work to improve these areas.  Parents may need to make some adjustments as they drop their kids off at school.

Construction crews are working at the following areas:

  • Regal and Rich
  • Garland and Cook
  • Empire and Stone/ proceeding on Stone from Empire to Bridgeport.

The City said they are prioritizing construction zones near schools and expect to have pedestrian upgrades done in October.
