SPOKANE, Wash. – The Spokane Fire Department announced Friday they will be adding 50 new firefighter positions after accepting a $9 million grant.
The addition of the positions will help the fastest-growing area of calls from the department.
The fire department will now be able to expand 24 hour emergency services to six stations.
“Everybody is really moving forward. Just with the acceptance of this grant sends a huge signal in the community and in the state of Washington that Spokane is moving forward,” said Brian Schaeffer of the Spokane Fire Department.
Schaeffer said the department is still trying to recover form dramatic cutbacks in 2004.
