SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. – A man was arrested Wednesday night for domestic violence.

Deputies were called to a home near Moen and Sprague around 7:30 p.m. by a 10-year-old boy who said his mother had been beaten up by her ex-boyfriend and was bleeding.

When deputies arrived they said the woman was bleeding heavily from her head and there was blood throughout the home. She was treated at the scene then transported to the hospital. Officials said he injuries were severe but are not believed to be life threatening.

Court documents said the boy told deputies he did not see what happened but he had heard a loud noise that he described as similar to a person being hit with an aluminum bat. He heard his mother make a cry for help and she came into his room and told him to call 911.

Court documents said the woman had been living with Sonny Cannella, 42, for the past two week but had broken up. She said she was on the phone when he came up behind her and slammed her head on the counter. According to court documents, the woman said Cannella had curb stomped her and she blacked out.

Deputies learned Cannella fled on foot before they arrived. K9 Bane and his handler arrived to scene to help with the search. Officials said K9 Bane led deputies to an alleyway behind the home where he found a man lying face down on the ground. Deputies told the man to show his hands but he did not respond. Authorities approached the man and detained him. He was positively identified as Cannella. During a search, officials said they found a pair of white shoes with blood on them and other items.

Cannella told deputies he had been drinking, taken medications and drank nicotine oil. He was given medical treatment before being transported and booked into the Spokane County Jail for second degree assault-domestic violence. He also had an active Wisconsin Department of Corrections felony warrant for his arrest.
