Toddler was hit by a car while playing in Coeur d'Alene parking lot

KREM 2's Amanda Roley goes to the scene where a toddler was hit by a car in a parking lot.

COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho --- A toddler was hit by a car in the Silver Lake apartment complex Wednesday night and prompted parents to reevaluate how close an eye they keep on their kids in the area.

The toddler is in critical but stable condition, and police report the driver simply did not see the girl.

A resident of the Silver Lake apartment complex, Patricia Clark, said it has become common to see residents driving quickly through the parking lot.

“Lots of speeders…even when the signs says five miles per hour…I’ve been expecting it sooner than this,” said Clark.

Clark occasionally watches her one-year-old granddaughter, and now is more reluctant to take her outside to play. She is not the only one with a child to look out for though. Clark said the complex is home to several children who play outside, and sometimes they play in the parking lot.

“I seldom see parents out in that part of the complex. Over there I do see parents…but on this side no. I think parents need to take more responsibility for their kids,” said Clark. "It scares me, actually."

The toddler was hit in the parking lot of the apartment complex Wednesday night and is being treated at Sacred Heart. Coeur d’Alene Police said the driver has been cooperative throughout the investigation. CAPD also confirmed no charges have been filed at this time.
