Driver of stolen vehicle crashes, impact starts wildfire in Schwana

Schwana, Wash. - Firefighters responded to a gas station in Schwana off Highway 243 after witnesses reported a vehicle crash that started a brush fire Saturday evening.

According to Grant County Sheriff's Office, the vehicle had just been stolen from a home in Desert Aire.

GCSO officials said a man was seen running from the scene.  Mattawa Police and sheriff's deputies found Fidel Lopez Martinez, 40, nearby the incident.  Martinez was identified as the man who ran from the truck and is in Grant County Jail for suspicion of motor vehicle theft and possession of a stolen vehicle.

GCSO officials said firefighters put out the brush fire and kept it from reaching pumps at the nearby gas station.

District 10 chief Eric Linn credited great interagency teamwork for preventing the fire from causing more damage.
