SPOKANE -- Street crews across the area worked hard Friday night de-icing and sanding the roads and highways.  Crews from the city of Spokane to the Department of Transportation were out since Friday morning.  But when temperatures get as cold as they were Friday night, there's not as much they can do.

Road crews say it takes just a dusting of snow and ice to turn roads into ice rinks overnight.  Nearly 15 de-icing trucks from the Department of Transportation started to hit the highways as soon as the first flakes fell.

The city of Spokane had five trucks out Friday night.  Spokane Valley hit the streets with two.  Both were on bridges and major intersections first.  But the D.O.T. says with overnight lows and some areas hitting below 15 degrees, liquid de-icers simply make the problem worse.

Crews say they try to do the best they can and do their part to get people home safe.
