SPOKANE -- Crime in Spokane is keeping police busy.  But it's also got the Lilac City on the list of most dangerous locations in the United States.

Spokane ranks 121st on the list which uses F.B.I. statistics on murder, rape, robbery, assault, and vehicle theft.  Camden, New Jersey took the top spot.

Tacoma, Washington came in 34th, Seattle ranked 183rd, and Spokane Valley took the 261st spot.

Maybe if, after our current police chief takes the job in San Fransifco, we get a police chief more sensative to the feelings of those who perpetrate such crimes, we will convince criminals not to be so mean. Just think how bad those poor inmates feel under the jurisdiction of Joe Arpaio in Maricopa County, Arizona.

Just think how nice it will be for the criminals next year when we don't have anybody to prosecute them or keep them in jail! We'll have a racetrack but our cars will be stolen so we can't get there. Thanks to Spokane County Commissioners Mielke and Richards!

I am still be more afraid of the police. At least a criminal would think twice before shooting me, or tazing me to death

You people are ridiculous. Spokane is safer than most cities on that list. That is why you live here. As for Spokane being on that list, I am sure it is based on all of the Pharmacy robberies. Why don't you be more constructive and help figure out a way to solve that issue instead of blaming the police. This place would be alot worse if they weren't here. The only reason you don't like them is because you probably did something wrong and were caught by the police.

Buhner, I for one am working on the problem. I have been heavily involved for the last 6 years in volunteer work with Spokane County (closely related to the crime issue). Being as close as I am to the problem gives me the knowledge to be able to make comments as I did. I agree Spokane County is safe . I would ask what you are doing to "solve the problem" but because of your comments I doubt anyone would believe you. Love & kisses, RR

I will admit that the only thing I am doing is educating my children between right and wrong which also includes the problems that go along with drugs and alcohol. As far as the big picture, I am doing nothing. I just can't stand people bashing the law to sound cool. To be part of the "it crowd." My comment was not based on your post. Although, I don't believe the chief will leave Spokane anytime soon. Just my opinion. I like what Arpaio does. He makes people pay in ways that make you think twice.

Here is the link. Just an observation. Yakima and Everett are in the top 100. They are above Phoenix and San Francisco.

Spokane sorry but you're becoming disappointing, aquireing all the problems of a big city, but few of the assets.

redrattler said on November 24, 2009 at 5:45 PM

Bohner, I am involved with soving the problem. That is how I can make comments with confidence. I must say that I am amazed that you have such clarvoyant abilities. These talents of yours must be very valuable to your law enforment in your volunteer work for the community.

buhner said on November 24, 2009 at 6:13 PM

Yes. You said that already. The rest makes no sense. Turning this into a personal attack doesn't bode well for somone who volunteers as a public servant.

spokannie said on November 24, 2009 at 7:53 PM

Seriously, it is going to get much worse when prosecutor positions are lost in Spokane County. Property crimes will rise because the criminals know those type of crimes will not be prosecuted which will cause more citizens to arm themselves which in turn will lead to people being shot and killed. Our county commissioners could care less as they pack away thousands of $ in their "rainy day" fund. If loosing Prosecutors is not deserving of the "rainy day" fund, I don't know what would be.

redrattler- Why do you choose to Identify yourself as a Volunteer with Spokane County when it is not needed. I am sure the county and Sheriffs Department appreciate your little comments representing them on this site. Is this true about your current and I say current, status with Spokane County or Shall I do a little background on who you are. Sincerly, Another Volunteer Guy

The problem is not major crimes: eventually they get solved. It's the same as any city of comparable size. Theft Theft Theft!!! Thats the problem and it runs deep within our society. Oh, did I mention bartenders over serving.

redrattler said on November 25, 2009 at 9:10 AM

Thanks eyeforaneye! You are exactly right, and who are are all these thieves? Stats show somewhere around 80% of crime is drug related. Yet some say that those incarcerated for drug offenses should be released, as this is not a violent crime. It boils down to this: There are some who find themselves caught up in the drug world and want out, we should help those who sincerely want to go straight. Those who prey on others by being active in the drug world should be busted hard. Spokane County has a "drug court" program that is very successful in helping first timers get clean and back into productive society. But... recent state cuts are hurting such programs. Here is a fact: For every $1 we spend on drug treatment and drug use prevention we save $7 - 10 in costs later such as courts, jails, emergency rooms.

Problem is simple: prosecuctors who can't or won't prosecute and a criminal "justice" system that doesn't do justice. Prison doesn't rehabilitate. once someone gets to that piont they are being imprisoned there just isn't much hope of making them a better person. We put criminals away, they become better crimanls, but at least they aren't hurting people during their time in prison. We need to lock them up to protect society not the fantasy of rehabilitation.

You think it is bad now? Wait until Jan 1, 2010 when the lay off's start for Spokane County. They are laying off the equvilant of the entire District Court staff-almost 30 people, including over 8 prosecutors and their support staff and clerks..
