City council unanimously approves Spokane Fire Chief

SPOKANE, Wash. – The Spokane City Council unanimously approved the City’s newest fire chief today.

Mayor David Condon recommended Brian Schaeffer for the position last month. He announced Schaeffer as the next fire chief during a public appearance on May 24. Schaeffer has been with the department for more than a decade and served as interim chief since November after former Police Chief Bobby Williams retired.

Schaeffer was one of five finalists for the position. Officials said 28 people applied for the opening. City leaders held public forums with the candidates back in May. Mayor Condon said he was stopped repeatedly by people asking why the City was spending time interviewing other applicants when the best choice was here in Spokane.

"Ultimately, they were right and we listened to the community's feedback, but we owed it to Spokane and to Brian to allow him an opportunity to shine amongst his peers," explained Condon.
